Why Mat Moms Exists: You Shouldn’t Have to Choose Between Motherhood and the Mat

Motherhood changes you. It doesn't have to take away the things that make you, you.

For many women, becoming a mom comes with the expectation that certain parts of their lives have to be put on hold.

For some of us, that's Jiu-Jitsu.

For others, it's lifting, running, fighting, competing, or simply being the woman who loves pushing herself physically.

But why should becoming a mother mean we have to stop doing the things we love?

That question is where Mat Moms began.

Hi, I'm Sabrina.

I'm a mom, a Jiu-Jitsu athlete, and the founder of Mat Moms.

I've experienced firsthand how much your body changes throughout pregnancy and motherhood, and how difficult it can be to find athletic clothing and gear that actually accommodates those changes.

When you're pregnant, your body is constantly changing. The clothes and equipment that worked before pregnancy don't necessarily work anymore.

And when it came to Jiu-Jitsu, there was a pretty obvious problem:

There wasn't really a gi designed around a pregnant woman's body.

Traditional gis aren't made for a growing belly. You can size up, but then you're left with an oversized uniform that still may not provide the coverage or fit you actually need.

I knew there had to be a better option.

So I created one.

Mat Moms was created to design Jiu-Jitsu apparel specifically for women navigating pregnancy and motherhood.

The Mat Moms Gi was designed with a growing belly in mind from the very beginning.

Our patent-pending Gi Top features additional fabric through the front for increased belly coverage, while our patent-pending maternity Gi Pants feature an expandable abdominal support system designed to accommodate a growing belly.

But Mat Moms is about more than creating a different kind of gi.

It's about creating a different mindset around motherhood and athletics.

You don't have to stop being you when you become a mom.

Motherhood is an incredible part of who we are, but it doesn't have to become our entire identity.

You can be a mom and still be an athlete.

You can have a baby and still love Jiu-Jitsu.

You can have a growing belly and still want to show up at the gym.

You can take time to recover, listen to your body, make modifications, and eventually find your way back to the things you love.

And sometimes, simply knowing that other moms are doing it too can make all the difference.

That's the community I want to build.

I want Mat Moms to be more than a brand.

I want it to be a community where women can find encouragement, support, and a reminder that they're not alone.

A place where we celebrate the moms who are still showing up.

The moms modifying their training.

The moms returning to the mats postpartum.

The moms bringing their babies to the gym.

The moms who aren't sure how they'll balance it all yet, but are determined to figure it out.

Because motherhood doesn't mean you have to choose between being a mom and being an athlete.

You can be both.

That's the heart behind Mat Moms.

Made for moms. Made for the mats. ❤️🥋

Welcome to Mat Moms.
